You might find stories of scams about
Grupo Batik Art/Sala Barna on the web. I do believe they are true, but
I cannot certify it. What I can tell you is that most artists I have
talked to who tried working with them encountered major problems to
say the least. As far as I was concerned, there were quite a few issues
of lack of communication and professionalism during the exhibition.
But mostly I had to send a friend to their gallery to finally hear back
from them and get them to send back my pictures 3 weeks after the end
of the exhibition. And then they sent them, all 10 mounted prints and
30 unmounted, in a little piece of corrugated cardboard, without any
wrapping of any kind, in a way that even a kid would know not to send
a package overseas (see pic, this is exactly how the package arrived).
All the plexiglas broke down of course, scratched and ruined all 10
mounted prints.
Sala Barna never even replied to my
requests of compensation. About a year later, the "director"
called me, apologizing for a lot of things and telling a moving story
about how he himself had been totally abused by one of his employees
who had been doing those things to discredit him in the art market.
He promised to reemburse me immediately. As you might have guessed,
I am still waiting.
